In work with both children and adolescents, parental involvement is an integral part of successful therapy. Outside of client sessions, regular meetings are scheduled with parents to plan how therapeutic progress may be supported and reinforced at home.
Child Individual Therapy — Ages 5-12
In working with children ages 5-12, play is often
used as a tool for communicating and negotiating their emotional world. Through
talk while engaged in activities including art or therapeutic board games, children
can learn to better express their emotions while strengthening their skills for
coping.
In addition supplemental tools, such as reading books and completing cognitive-behavioral-based workbooks are utilized as a means for supporting the process while allowing for more concrete understanding and application.
Adolescent Individual Therapy — Ages 12+
In working with pre-teens and teenagers, it is important
to recognize and value the unique set of experiences occurring at this challenging
phase of life. In navigating through adolescence, children may experience difficulties
related to identity and self-esteem as they begin to define themselves as separate
from their parents.
In creating a therapeutic space for working with teens, talk therapy is combined with more experiential exercises that can help them process their experiences including journaling, creative writing, art and listening and talking about music.
The goal is to aid adolescents in developing a healthy sense of self by gaining skills for expressing emotions, understanding how their belief system impacts choices in relationships and behaviors, and fostering strong communication skills.
